About Us

The Research Programme on Biomedical Informatics (GRIB) is a joint research programme of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) and the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. GRIB brings together a multidisciplinary team of more than seventy scientists, as well as technical and management staff. Mar Albà (IMIM) is Director of GRIB.

At GRIB we develop and apply computational methods and information technologies for a better understanding and prediction of biological phenomena, with a special emphasis on those related to human diseases. Research areas include the function and evolution of genomes, protein structural dynamics, pharmacogenomics and data mining. Over the years, GRIB has led and participated in numerous EU-funded projects and developed multiple collaborations with the pharmaceutical industry. The Programme has also been supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, Generalitat de Catalunya and La Marató de TV3, among others.

We are located at Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), which hosts several Centers and offers a vibrant and international research atmosphere. GRIB consists of 10 research groups plus 2 additional associated groups led by Roderic Guigó at CRG and Núria López-Bigas at IRB. GRIB staff is involved in pre and postgraduate teaching at the UPF and we are coordinators of the Master in Bioinformatics for Health Sciences.

The research activity of GRIB has originated the development of numerous scientific software and the creation of some spin-off companies: MedBioinformatics Solutions, Acellera and Chemotargets.
